The shell of the Horseshoe Crab is often covered in algae, slipper shells, and barnacles that hitch a ride on this slow-moving, tank-shaped animal. Horseshoe Crabs help control populations of various benthic invertebrates targeted as prey and they themselves are a food source for other marine animals. The fertilized eggs of Horseshoe Crabs are an important source of energy for many animals, including arctic nesting shorebirds like Red Knots and Ruddy Turnstones.</span></div><div><br /><span style="font-size: medium;"><b><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Spawning Season Brings Horseshoe Crabs into Shallow Water: </span></b><br /><br />The Horseshoe Crab spawning season starts in April and continues through June. Adults move from deep offshore waters to shallow inshore waters where nesting occurs. Males follow females inshore and will try to attach to her back shell so they can be present when she spawns. Males are smaller in size than females and only 1 male can attach directly to her back. However, other males, called satellite males, crowd around this love-pair hoping to also provide sperm for egg fertilization.</span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><p style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(85, 85, 85); color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: left;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></strong></p><h2 style="text-align: left;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Why are they in Trouble? </span></strong></h2><p style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(85, 85, 85); color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: left;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Horseshoe crab populations are in decline in the coastal waters of Massachusetts due to a number of factors:</span></span></p><ul style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(85, 85, 85); color: #555555; line-height: 2; text-align: left;"><li style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">over harvesting by the commerical bait industry (eel, conch and whelk)</span></li><li style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">loss of <span style="box-sizing: border-box;">spawning</span> habitat due to sea level rise and armoring of our shorelines</span></li><li style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">use the</span> biomedical industry for an essential medical safety resource (LAL)</span></li></ul><h2 style="text-align: left;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The Bait Industry:</span></strong></h2><p style="box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(85, 85, 85); color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">The bait industry is composed of local hand harvesters and offshore trawlers. Hand harvesters collect Horseshoe Crabs along shorelines during the spring spawning season, whereas trawlers catch crabs when participating in the mixed species trawl fishery in late spring through the fall in Nantucket and Vineyard Sounds. The bait industry is allowed to harvest thousands of Horseshoe Crabs for use in the commercial eel, whelk, and conch fisheries and can currently take up to 165,000 crabs each season. LAL is a protein coagulation system that detects contamination by dangerous bacterial toxins called endotoxins. There is an alternative or man-made derivative to Horseshoe Crab blood called recombinant Factor C or rFC for short. Studies have shown rFC to be just as effective as Horseshoe Crab LAL. These type of public campaigns can be successful, especially if large numbers of people write letters regarding a state or federal plan or practice. One such example is a 2023 letter writing campaign against lifting the moratorium on the harvest of female Horseshoe Crabs in Delaware Bay. Over 30,000 letters supporting the moratorium were received by Delaware officials who recently decided to keep the moratorium in place due to the large outcry from the public.</span></p></div></div></td></tr></tbody></table><table border="0" cellpadding="20" cellspacing="0" class="text_block block-9" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: black; width: 100%; word-break: break-word;"><tbody style="box-sizing: border-box;"><tr style="box-sizing: border-box;"><td class="pad" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><div style="box-sizing: border-box;"><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 14px; line-height: 2;"><h2 style="color: #555555;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Horseshoe Crab Management:</span></span></h2><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) manages the Horseshoe Crab on a federal level and the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) manages this species on a state level. The ASMFC developed a Horseshoe Crab Fishery Management Plan and oversees spawning areas in all Atlantic states. DMF has recently sent a memorandum to the Marine Fisheries Advisory Commission with changes to Commercial Horseshoe Crab limits for 2023. We support a number of these changes and that is the basis for this letter writing campaign.</span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"> </span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">One change that DMF is proposing is to adopt a January 1 through May 31 closer to all Horseshoe Crab harvesting and rescind the existing five-day closers around each new and full moon. DMF is also proposing to reduce the bait quota by 25,000 individuals, from 165,000 to 140,000 horseshoe crabs. DMF is also requesting daily electronic reporting for all bait and biomedical harvesters. This would eliminate the lag time that occurs with the current reporting system and would keep harvesters from surpassing their quotas. DMF is requesting additional changes but we feel these are the most important to address.</span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"> </span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">We also feel that DMF should eliminate any harvesting of Horseshoe Crabs for commercial bait since DMF considers whelk to be depleted throughout their range in Massachusetts' waters. DMF's 2018 stock assessment for Channeled Whelk indicated that the resource was overfished with overfishing occurring in Nantucket Sound. The harvesting and killing of thousands of Horseshoe Crabs to support a failing fishery is not the type of management that DMF should be providing. </span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"> </span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">To read DMF's proposed</span></strong></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Regulatory Amendments for Horseshoe Crabs (322 CMR 6.34, 7.01, and 7.04),</span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">click <a href="https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2023/03/31/PHN_DMF%20Com%20Regs%202023_Advisory.pdf" rel="noopener" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3498db;" target="_blank" title="HERE">HERE </a></span></strong></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"> </span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">To read DMF's memorandum to the Marine Fisheries Advisory Commission</span></strong></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">From Dan McKiernan</span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Subject: Proposal to Adult Commercial Horseshoe Crab Limits</span><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"> </strong><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">for 2023 </span></span></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">click </span><span style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3498db;"><a href="https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2023/03/31/4A_HSC%20Public%20Hearing%20Proposal.pdf" rel="noopener" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #3498db;" target="_blank" title="HERE">HERE</a></span></span></strong></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></strong></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: center;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"></span></strong></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: #555555; text-align: center;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg_zRVVfGZILMgRAHTFS3pNKSWZT95r7DkcRVjTimaKpbwLTAjbfIepVmPzlRXzaoE-Md0HppBnXtYqOSPlXhsN7M3_hKNR3BX2KWtbeSVJZvoCwtpN9yAnR6LkmkNiHtr1xETQfrWl6aadMLWrwYZU0s8RKAs30F80otJKqKCO_l-6-OW8XRzEdu0AIQ" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg_zRVVfGZILMgRAHTFS3pNKSWZT95r7DkcRVjTimaKpbwLTAjbfIepVmPzlRXzaoE-Md0HppBnXtYqOSPlXhsN7M3_hKNR3BX2KWtbeSVJZvoCwtpN9yAnR6LkmkNiHtr1xETQfrWl6aadMLWrwYZU0s8RKAs30F80otJKqKCO_l-6-OW8XRzEdu0AIQ=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></span></strong></div><h2 style="color: #555555;"><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Letter of Support for the Horseshoe Crab:</span></strong></h2><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><p style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #555555; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: medium;">Please write DMF and let them know that you are concerned about the future of Horseshoe Crabs and indicate what measures you would like them to put in place in future management plans. These external and internal examinations are crucial for our better understanding of this little know species that lives off the Cape year round. Although Kathy had seen this many times before, she was amazed at the size and color of the eggs in each of the large 2 ovaries. Each ovary sits on top of one of the two kidneys, which are also very large and heavy in size. The eggs in this female were well-developed and quite large, with huge amounts of green yolk. No one knows why torpedo ray eggs have green yolks and NECWA has reached out to many fishery scientists for help on this issue. Unfortunately, no one has yet figured out the answer, and this is a reminder as to why this type of research is so important, especially when dealing with little known species lie the torpedo ray, the only electric ray in our waters. <p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh64wwXPlQEfeGrc4SjUCRF9EeOVHQdvTiKUjLLp6rS0CWKVdicrUHJQ4JEoBv0yUgpXsZsosQMZZevUfszwp3rZI12HPkp4sw0fRAzfcQnVAF3wCDDxM7Zk73z8ifwZVtsJGXBbxO8UJ-YIhvsVZyh3r41JrVqIjCDxRGepnQ4_GDU6FzhHlOaxkU1BQ" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="617" data-original-width="875" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh64wwXPlQEfeGrc4SjUCRF9EeOVHQdvTiKUjLLp6rS0CWKVdicrUHJQ4JEoBv0yUgpXsZsosQMZZevUfszwp3rZI12HPkp4sw0fRAzfcQnVAF3wCDDxM7Zk73z8ifwZVtsJGXBbxO8UJ-YIhvsVZyh3r41JrVqIjCDxRGepnQ4_GDU6FzhHlOaxkU1BQ=w400-h283" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A photo of the ovary with its large eggs that have green yolks.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p>As they wrapped up the necropsy, Kathy collected samples of muscle and liver for further study. NECWA is collaborating with Dr. John Logan (Div. of Marine Fisheries) and John Chisholm (Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life) so tissues and data will be shared with these scientists. The team was also able to weigh the carcass with the assistance of a dog walker who help was gratefully accepted as this carcass weighed over 118 lbs. On average, female torpedo rays are larger and heavier than males and the largest female that NECWA has weighed came in around 200 lbs. </p><p>At the end of each necropsy, we cut out the liver and chop it up into bit sized pieces in order to feed the hungry gulls that flock to each of our necropsies and watch us with great aniticipation. This is one small way we can give back to the other wildlife that depend on these types of stranding for their survival. Kathy pulled the carcass back into the water in the hopes that it would drift offshore so as not to land again on a beach and decompose in front of anyone's beachfront property. </p><p></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh_Hl3aoztwh-RF9Xj6E7A9XXUwNw2BwE3R4Fe90bo2fvAhIDU-wuPWejdEYBw-dYtkU4o5bOh2IwZ7fm46FPEp_UP4tKFgEw_IojurBKXZB-INb3uBUJf9rdRWQOaQws8ILraV3ON3qlj9IfMTGuCiieNPA1jk-I58zVy4EIbT0toDn-pi0qSQAEy4Sw" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="751" data-original-width="875" height="343" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh_Hl3aoztwh-RF9Xj6E7A9XXUwNw2BwE3R4Fe90bo2fvAhIDU-wuPWejdEYBw-dYtkU4o5bOh2IwZ7fm46FPEp_UP4tKFgEw_IojurBKXZB-INb3uBUJf9rdRWQOaQws8ILraV3ON3qlj9IfMTGuCiieNPA1jk-I58zVy4EIbT0toDn-pi0qSQAEy4Sw=w400-h343" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Gulls enjoying the liver from the female torpedo ray. </td></tr></tbody></table><br />The last step of any torpedo ray necropsy is to cut a deep V-notch into their lobed caudal fin (tail). We were hoping that this would be the last torpedo ray stranding for the season, but a few days later, on 1/28/2023, the 54th torpedo rays carcass was reported to NECWA and was necropsied by NECWA intern Kevin Dougherty and NECWA volunteer Al Poirier. <p>Wareham, MA. June 27, 2022 — On the morning of June 14, three diamondback terrapins were struck and killed by cars while crossing the Weweantic Bridge, the busy Route 6 thoroughfare linking the towns of Wareham and Marion. A concerned motorist, Mike Maurer from Marion, managed to save a fourth terrapin and notified NECWA of the other fatalities.
</p>
<p>It was a shocking tragedy and a clear sign that terrapins and other turtles are in grave danger on our roads. The Weweantic Bridge is a known hotspot for these accidents: nearby terrapins come ashore looking to nest and are funneled on to it, ending up in the middle of mid-morning traffic. NECWA is working with local and state authorities to find a solution to this problem and to increase awareness of the bridge’s safety issues.</p>
<p>The reality is that adult female terrapins are running out of options when it comes time to nest each year. Urban encroachment, coastal armoring, and rising sea levels are eroding their available nesting area on both sides, and their little remaining terrestrial habitat is crisscrossed by dangerous roads. These females have to find a good place to lay their eggs, and they’ll go the distance to do it — even if it means putting their lives at risk. Turtles often cross busy roads during the late spring and early summer of nesting season, and it’s our responsibility to keep an eye out for these scaly pedestrians in an attempt to minimize fatalities. Terrapins live long lives, reproduce slowly, and suffer from high hatchling mortality rates. Because of this, the death of a reproductively mature female can do lasting harm to the future of a local population.
</p>
<p>Anytime you see a turtle on or near a road, please call NECWA’s hot-line at 508-566-0009 for advice and assistance. If the situation is safe for you, move the turtle off the road in the direction it was heading. Never lift the turtle by the tail: this can injure their spine, which is fused to the top of their shell.
</p>
<p>If you find an injured turtle, call NECWA for assistance or take it to a local wildlife rehabilitation center (see list below). If the animal is dead, you should also give us a call — NECWA can remove the carcass from the road, collect identifying information about the turtle, and record when and where it was hit.

<p>In the early parts of the Summer, when horseshoe crabs are most abundant, volunteers perform surveys to better understand how the horseshoe crab population is faring. New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA) is one of the organizations that volunteers to take part in these surveys, organized by Mass Audubon. The data from these surveys is sent to the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) who then use this information to make decisions about the best conservation practices for horseshoe crabs.</p>

<p> One of the perks of these surveys is that you get to be at the beach, enjoy the nice weather, and learn. When I took part in a survey, I got to see what goes on behind the scenes. One thing I learned quickly was that female horseshoe crabs tend to be much larger than males. Size alone isn’t enough to tell them apart which is why we need to flip them over and check their pincers. Male’s pedipalps have an appearance that looks like a boxing glove while female horseshoe crab pincers all look similar. This is helpful because surveyors need to be exact when counting the number of males and females at the surveying site. </p>
<p>After we finished the survey we walked back, soaking wet, to our car and changed out of our cold, damp clothes as soon as we could. This might sound like a bad thing to some people but for anyone who doesn’t mind getting down and dirty it’s a great experience that I highly recommend.</p>
<h2>What’s the Point of these Surveys?</h2>
<p>The number of horseshoe crabs have been on a sharp decline since 1990 for a variety of reasons. One thing that sets them apart is limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL). This is a chemical that’s only found in the blood of horseshoe crabs and is widely used to test for the presence of endotoxins in the medical field.</p>
<p>The number of horseshoe crabs have been on a sharp decline since 1990 for a variety of reasons. One thing that sets them apart is limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL). This is a chemical that’s only found in the blood of horseshoe crabs and is widely used to test for the presence of endotoxins in the medical field.
</p>
<p>Due to their unique blood, hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs are taken to laboratories each year where they’re bled and then released back into the ocean. However, up to 30% of the horseshoe crabs that are bled end up dying and others are misplaced into different locations than the ones they were taken from. To re-stabilize horseshoe crab populations, organizations such as the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) prohibit harvesting horseshoe crab females who have been targeted in the past due to their larger size. In order to stop the declining population of horseshoe crabs, the surveys conducted by NECWA, and other organizations are necessary so that the ASMFC, DMF, and other related companies can prevent overharvesting.
